One of the best parts of living in Southern Arizona is having some of the most beautiful desert and mountain trails in the country right in our backyard — and the good news is, many of them welcome your four-legged hiking buddy too. Whether you’re new to the area or a longtime local looking for a new spot to explore, here are three dog-friendly favorites near Tucson, plus a few important tips to keep your pup safe on the trail.

1. Madera Canyon

Tucked into the Santa Rita Mountains south of Tucson, Madera Canyon is a favorite for hikers and birdwatchers alike. With shaded canyon trails, cooler temperatures than the valley floor, and stunning mountain views, it’s a great option for a longer hike with your dog. Just be sure to check current trail rules before you go, as some trails within the canyon have restrictions.

2. Catalina State Park

Sitting at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains, Catalina State Park offers a mix of flat desert trails and more rugged terrain, with beautiful views of the mountains and seasonal streams. It’s a popular spot for hikers with dogs, but keep in mind that many of the trails here offer little to no shade, so timing your visit matters.

3. Sweetwater Preserve

A local favorite close to the city, Sweetwater Preserve is one of the designated dog-friendly trails through Pima County. With rolling desert terrain and a network of trails for all skill levels, it’s an easy, accessible option for an afternoon hike with your dog.

A Few Things We’ve Learned Along the Way

Hiking with dogs in the desert is incredibly rewarding, but Southern Arizona’s climate means a little extra planning goes a long way:

  • Shade (or lack of it) matters. Many trails in our area are wide open with little to no shade, so the time of day — and time of year — you choose to hike makes a big difference, especially with dogs along.
  • Dog shoes are a game changer. Desert terrain can get hot and rocky, and protecting your dog’s paws with proper hiking shoes has made a real difference for our own pups.
  • Always bring water — for both of you. Dogs can overheat and dehydrate quickly, so pack more water than you think you’ll need.
  • Stick to fall and spring when possible. Most hiking here is best done during the cooler months. Summer temperatures can climb to dangerous levels, making it unsafe for hiking, especially with dogs.

Southern Arizona’s trails are one of the many reasons people fall in love with this area — and that goes for four-legged family members too. If you’re thinking about making Tucson home, or you’re already here and looking for your next adventure, I’d love to help you find a property that’s close to the trails you and your pup will love most.
