September brings a little bit of everything to Southern Arizona. The desert is still warm, monsoon season can create spectacular skies, and communities throughout Tucson and the surrounding region come alive with festivals, cultural events, outdoor adventures, and local traditions.
Whether you’re a longtime Southern Arizona resident, new to the area, or simply looking for something fun to do this month, September is a great time to explore beyond your usual routine.
Here are some of my favorite ways to enjoy Southern Arizona this September.
🌵 1. Explore the Sonoran Desert
September is a beautiful time to reconnect with the landscape that makes Southern Arizona so special.
Visit Saguaro National Park, explore Tucson Mountain Park, or take a scenic drive through the Catalina Mountains. If you’re heading outdoors, plan for the early morning or later afternoon when temperatures are more comfortable, and always bring plenty of water.
For a different desert experience, spend a few hours at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, where you can experience the region’s plants, wildlife, and natural history in one place.
Southern Arizona has an incredible variety of landscapes, from cactus-filled desert to pine forests in the higher elevations. You don’t have to travel far to find a completely different view.
🌿 2. Spend a Morning at Tucson Botanical Gardens
Looking for something peaceful? Make time for Tucson Botanical Gardens.
The Gardens have a full calendar of September programs, including nature-focused classes, workshops, and family activities. Their September calendar includes events such as Dragonflies and Damselflies, gardening workshops, botanical art activities, and nature journaling.
September is also the final month of the Gardens’ Dog Days of Summer, so dog owners can bring their leashed pups along for morning garden walks through September 30.
Local tip: Go earlier in the day, especially while summer temperatures are still hanging around.
🎨 3. Discover Tucson’s History & Culture
September is a great month to slow down and discover the stories that helped shape Southern Arizona.
Visit the Presidio San Agustín del Tucson Museum, explore Barrio Viejo, or spend an afternoon discovering Tucson’s historic architecture, museums, galleries, and public art.
The Presidio Museum has several special September events scheduled, including a Mainly Murals walking tour on September 5, a Mexican Independence Day Celebration on September 12, a Barrio Viejo walking tour on September 20, and a Presidio Wall walking tour at dusk on September 26.
These experiences are a great reminder that living in Southern Arizona means being surrounded by layers of history and culture.
🌶️ 4. Celebrate Chile Season
September wouldn’t be complete without enjoying one of Southern Arizona’s favorite flavors: roasted chile.
The 24th Annual Roasted Chile Festival takes place September 11–13, with local markets celebrating fresh-roasted chiles, local vendors, food, and live entertainment.
Pick up some fresh chile, try something new from a local vendor, and enjoy one of those unmistakably Southern Arizona food traditions.
🇲🇽 5. Celebrate Mexican Independence Day
Tucson’s deep connection to Mexican culture is one of the things that makes this community so unique.
On September 12, the Presidio Museum will host a Mexican Independence Day Celebration featuring Ballet Folklórico, mariachi music, and the traditional El Grito.
September 15 also marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, making this a wonderful time to support local businesses, enjoy cultural events, and learn more about the history and traditions that are woven into Southern Arizona.
⛰️ 6. Head Up to Mount Lemmon
If the valley feels a little too warm, head toward higher elevation.
The drive up Mount Lemmon offers an entirely different Southern Arizona experience, with changing landscapes, mountain views, cooler temperatures, and opportunities for hiking, photography, picnicking, and exploring Summerhaven.
It’s one of my favorite reminders that Southern Arizona isn’t just desert. Within a relatively short drive, you can trade saguaros for pine trees and dramatically cooler mountain air.
Tip: Check weather and road conditions before heading up, particularly during monsoon season.
🌌 7. Look Up at the Night Sky
Southern Arizona is an incredible place for stargazing.
The Tucson region has become a destination for astronomy enthusiasts, with dark-sky locations, observatories, planetariums, and the Tucson Astro Trail connecting several astronomy-focused destinations.
Consider planning an evening around stargazing at a dark-sky location or exploring one of the area’s astronomy attractions.
Bring a blanket, water, a light jacket, and give your eyes time to adjust to the darkness. Sometimes the best entertainment in Arizona is simply looking up.
🏜️ 8. Take a Southern Arizona Day Trip
September is also a great excuse to get out of town for the day.
Consider a weekend drive to:
- Sonoita & Elgin for scenic landscapes and wine country
- Tubac for art, shopping, history, and small-town charm
- Bisbee for historic architecture, galleries, and a completely different mountain-town atmosphere
- Tombstone for a taste of Old West history
- Kartchner Caverns for an underground adventure
- Sierra Vista & the Huachucas for mountain scenery and birding
- Oracle for a quieter escape and access to beautiful high-desert landscapes
One of the best things about living in Southern Arizona is having so many different experiences within an easy road trip.
🍂 9. Start Looking for Fall
Fall arrives a little differently in Southern Arizona.
You may not see changing leaves and crisp mornings everywhere just yet, but September is when locals begin shifting toward fall activities, weekend festivals, outdoor dinners, football, and cooler evenings.
One September event to put on your calendar is Sahuarita Oktoberfest on September 25, a lakeside community celebration featuring German-inspired food, live music, cultural entertainment, games, and more.
It’s a fun way to enjoy a little fall spirit while still embracing the Arizona sunshine.
☀️ 10. Enjoy the Simple Things
Sometimes you don’t need a big event or a long road trip.
Grab a Sonoran hot dog. Meet a friend for coffee. Take a sunset drive. Visit a local farmers market. Explore a neighborhood you’ve never walked through. Sit outside and watch a monsoon storm roll across the mountains.
Southern Arizona has a way of making everyday moments memorable.
